Waterlilies on the Moon
by Pieter Nijsten & Audrey Wang

This is the second book from Dutch photographer Pieter Nijsten consisting of 44 pages of black and white waterscapes.

The photographs are paired with excerpts of dialogues between the tworiends discussing the formation of the book, alongside childhood memories, and their mutual admiration for the moon.

The book begins with a poem ‘a dancer in a trance’ in both Dutch and English from Dutch poet Emma Crebolder, written in 1995.

“P/ Did you think about the book? Some weeks ago I told Emma Crebolder about a new book – she was very enthusiastic- and yesterday she asked some questions about it. She likes water lilies a lot. How is the weather over there? Here the sun and the moon are still far away. I was going to take photos in Emma’s garden but the weather is too gray and it doesn’t stop raining (however some months ago I took some photos from wet trees and leaves).

A/ “They remind me of my childhood days in Taipei, when i used to visit the botanical garden across from my elementary school with my mother after class. When I see the photos now, the lack of color in them in a way takes them out of context – they could very well be water lilies on the moon.”

“P/ It makes me think of the days I didn’t want to go to school for some days telling my parents i didnt feel well… And when i heard the news on the radio it was nice to hear there were so many things happening everywhere in the world but I wasn’t a part of it.”
